Over the past three years, Armstrong Atlantic State University has helped many students fulfill their dreams of careers in computers through its CSEMS (Computer Science, Engineering and Mathematics Scholarships) program. Through the leadership of Principle Investigator Dr. Ray Greenlaw, and later Principle Investigator Dr. Mark Burge and co-Principle Investigator Mr. Chris McCarthy, the College of Science and Technology at Armstrong has received grants from the National Science Foundation totaling more than $600,000. The money from these grants has been used to provide many talented students with fulltime scholarships; enabling them to focus on their academic work and helping to lessen the financial burden of attending college. Many of these students are non-traditional students—students attending college later in life—who are ineligible for Georgia’s HOPE scholarship.
Since the inception of the program in the fall of 2002, CSEMS scholars have been able to earn their degrees in Computer Science or Information Technology. With such degrees, they have found excellent jobs in the high technology workforce, and are employed at such businesses as Memorial Health University Medical Center and OSIsoft.
Now, in 2004, with the receipt of its second four-year grant from the National Science Foundation, the College of Science and Technology is expanding the CSEMS program to include mathematics students. Under Principle Investigator Dr. Mark Burge and co-Principle Investigators Dr. Raymond Greenlaw and Mr. Chris McCarthy, the College of Science and Technology will continue to help talented and needy students fulfill their dreams of careers in computers and mathematics.

The deadline for signing up for bulletin boards is July 30, 2004. You may sign up for as many boards as you like via e-mail or via the sign-up sheet on Chris McCarthy’s door (Science Center 270). Follow the link to see the list of eligible bulletin boards. No more than two people may work together on one board. Remember, each bulletin board is worth one CSEMS participation point, and each bulletin board must meet criteria set forth in the evaluation form.
Boards must be up by August 13, 2004. Please set up an appointment with Chris McCarthy in order to get your design approved and to make arrangements for getting any necessary supplies.

We have great news! Armstrong Atlantic’s CSEMS program was selected this month by the National Science Foundation as one of only a very few programs to be expanded. Beginning this Fall, Math majors will be eligible to compete for CSEMS Scholarships.
- July 2004
CSEMS Scholars are now required to earn ten participation points each semester. Failure to earn the required amount of points will result in a one-semester suspension of your scholarship. Participation points can be earned by actively participating in the following activities:
- Noontime CS/Math colloquia: 1 point each
- ACM meetings: 1 point each
- Select AASU Day booths (fall semester only): 2 points
- Spring Banquet: 2 points
- Spring College of Science and Technology Quiz Bowl: 2 points (+1 point for helping)
- Creating a College of Science and Technology bulletin board: 1 point per bulletin board
- CSEMS video project (this summer only): 5 points (credited towards Fall 2004)
- July 2004
The CSEMS Video Project is an opportunity for CSEMS scholars to earn 5
participation points for the Fall 2004 semester by working together to
create a video about CSEMS. This will be a fun and rewarding activity. At
least five scholars must participate in the project, or the opportunity will
be cancelled. The final video about CSEMS will be due by September 1, 2004.
The initial meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 29 in
Science Center 204 (Conference Room). Only scholars who attend this meeting
will be eligible to participate in the project. At this meeting, an
overview of the project will be presented.
During the first week, the group will be responsible for coordinating and
scheduling at least four full group meetings and creating an initial outline
for the movie. Over the course of the project, there will be two due dates: (1) Monday, August 9: a script and storyboard must be submitted and approved; (2) Wednesday, September 1: the video must be submitted.
The number of participation points awarded at the end of the project will be
deducted by 1 point for each day that either of these due dates is missed.
An evaluation system to be used for awarding participation points and a set
of guidelines will be presented at the initial meeting. All members of the
group will receive the same number of participation points at the end of the
project.
Again, this will be a fun project in which CSEMS scholars will have the
opportunity to earn up to half of their required CSEMS participation points
for the Fall 2004 semester. We hope to see you at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday,
July 29!

The College of Science and Technology is now requiring participation points for students to be eligible for their NSF/CSEMS scholarships. The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) is offering a fun and easy way to earn a maximum of 4 participation points. A CSEMS Scholar can earn these participation points by volunteering to work at the "ACM Welcome Back Cookout". This cookout will help raise money for the ACM as well as inform students about the organization. A CSEMS Scholar can earn 1 participation point for every 2 hrs that he/she volunteers. The cookout dates and times are the following:
- Monday August 16th 10:00 PM - 2:00 PM
- Tuesday August 17th 10:00 PM - 2:00 PM
These times include set-up and clean-up.
If you are interested, please e-mail Katie Hoenshell no later than August 1 with the following information: name, phone number, the times that you are willing to work on August 16th and 17th.
This is a nice way to earn participation points before the semester starts to get busy with exams and projects. If you will not be able to volunteer please feel free to stop by the cookout and grab something to eat. Hope to see you all this upcoming semester.
